Sitting down with Steven

Steven Ledger is the President of Nambour Cricket Club, based at Nambour Showgrounds. Although they’re known as the Cutters, Steven assures us that they’re a welcoming group of players who just want everyone to have a good time.

Tell us a bit about your club.

The club was established 130-odd years ago, although cricket’s been played on our grounds for quite a bit longer than that. We currently have 4 senior men’s teams and 7 junior teams, as well as a women’s team made up of members from nearby Yandina and Palmwoods’ clubs.

Senior training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm, and Getting involved in sports has a big impact on personal development, which is something we’re committed to as a club. We’ve recently partnered with The Farm Gym to help our 11- to 17-year-old juniors build their confidence and improve their teamwork skills, and are planning to extend this to our senior teams as well.

What has been your main goal over the last 12 months?

We’re continuing to provide cricket for all ages and skill levels, rather than focusing on elite cricketers. We’re dedicated to our local community, and want to foster an environment where everyone’s enjoying themselves. Although it’s nice to have success through matches, it’s equally important to develop our players’ skills to help them gain confidence and ensure they’re enjoying themselves. Former NSW representative Rod Davison works with our junior teams on a weekly basis and assists our coaches with skill development in our younger players.

We’ve also increased our activity within the community by driving sponsorships, which not only provides our club with funding to help us continue to provide cricket for our members, but also encourages everyone involved to support local businesses.

What sets you apart from other clubs?

Nambour is everyone’s happy place. We’re a friendly lot, always treating everyone equally and with respect. We all want to see each other succeed, and the club itself continue to get bigger and better. You’re always welcome at Nambour.

What’s your involvement been with the club?

I’ve been involved in the club since I was 10 years old. Both of my grandfathers were members, then my dad and uncles, then me. Now, my son and my sister’s son are in the junior blasters team, and my dad’s on board as the junior blaster coordinator. Hopefully we can continue this generational involvement, not just with my family but with those of our other members, too.

Goes to show that once you’re a part of the Nambour family, you’ll never want to leave!
